Adrian first awoke to the feeling of Ben’s nose on his own. One of Ben’s hands twined together with one of Adrian’s while the other pulled him closer. Ben breathed against him. His glasses pushed up against Adrian’s cheeks. Adrian feared the worst. Ben had died, and this was all some dream of his spirit moving on. Ben kissed his lips lightly, pulling away quickly as if fearing he would get caught.

Adrian simply went about his business after Ben disappeared. He couldn’t afford a complete mental breakdown, and he tried to assure himself that Ben was somewhere safe. He navigated the mirror plane before, so if he hadn’t made it home, he could navigate the mirror plane again. The snow worsened, and the phone lines continued to be dead. Sheriff Morgan guessed that one of the cell towers were down. “We’re usually one of the last towns to get things fixed,” she said. “We’re small and we’re in bumfuck nowheresville. We’re not exactly a priority.”

The four went out to three different sites where people disappeared and the lights appeared, but they found no evidence of an abduction or landing. The snow whipping across the flat landscape would have covered any tracks, but even with some digging, they found no materials that suggested a spaceship had fallen apart nor did they find any clothes from the abducted people.

“Okay, I think I found the file,” Bigfoot said through the speakerphone. “Is he there with you?”
“He’s here,” Adrian said, smiling at Ben through the mirror.
“We had one case where two police officers arrived on a domestic disturbance call, and one of the officers chased a man into a mirror. When the officer came back out of the mirror, he wasn’t himself. It turned out that a demon had possessed him. It looks like we’re calling them Mirror Demons. We should make up more technical terms for this stuff.”
